Our Services
Our Ecological Restoration Services and Methods Include:
Restoration of remnant grasslands (prairie, savanna, glade, barren, etc) and open woodlands
Prescribed Fire
Prescribed fire is a safe and appropriate intervention in the majority of our ecosystems in the Southeast. Long before the arrival of Europeans, fires were sparked naturally by lightning strikes and intentionally set by Indigenous Peoples. Many of our upland plant species such as oaks, pines, asters, milkweed, blueberries, and native grasses all depend on fire to thrive and reproduce for generations. Without fire, trees and shrubs shade out the ground layer of herbaceous plants, which in turn decreases the biodiversity in an area and ultimately the loss of open ecosystems. Many species of wildlife require this habitat and most, such as the northern bobwhite, are in steep decline.
Prescribed fire also reduces the amount of fuel on the ground, which can lower the risk of an unplanned wildfire.
We hold prescribed fire manager certifications for GA and TN.
Herbicide Applications
Using herbicides can be the most effective way to control the growth of invasive plants or other species undesirable to a site.
We use these judiciously in conjunction with promoting native competition.
We use various application methods including hack-and-squirt, basal bark, cut stump, and foliar spraying.
Mechanical Removal
Our crew is trained and skilled in the use of chainsaws and brush cutters to safely remove woody and herbaceous plant species.
With access to machinery such as miniature excavators and mulchers, we can clean up woody debris as desired while disturbing as little soil as possible.
Native grassland reconstruction
We do diverse, high-quality native plantings modeled after local remnant (original, old-growth) grasslands.
This includes site preparation, seed mix design, planting, and maintenance.
Biological Monitoring
If you are interested in knowing the plants and animals that call your property home, we can use vegetation plots, mammal, bird, insect, amphibian, and reptile surveys to give you an understanding of the life that resides around you. These surveys also document the changes in these organisms over time.
Restoration Planning
Maybe you would like to do the work yourself, we can assess your site and write you a plan.
Additional Services Include:
Stream, pond, wetland, and vernal pool restoration/ reconstruction
UAV (drone) aerial photography
Mapping
