The Southeastern United States was once a complex mosaic of numerous, distinct ecosystems. Meandering creeks made their way through bottomland hardwood forests and wet meadows. These bottomlands transitioned into oak, hickory, and pine savanna and woodlands as the elevation increased. Within these were glades and barrens on shallow soil. The wetter north slopes and ravines held mesic forests. Plains and rolling hills with frequent fire supported savannas and prairies. All of these unique ecosystems, and more, once existed harmoniously across the Southeast.

Today, the remnants of these landscapes are greatly altered by humankind. While a few superb examples of these ecosystems still exist today, most of these areas suffer from mismanagement, neglect, development, and fragmentation. Invasive plant species also are out-competing native plants in these ecosystems.

At Coosa Ecological, we strive to rehabilitate and restore ecosystems back to a healthy, functional, and biodiverse state. By analyzing scientific and historical data, we can formulate a site-specific restoration plan to achieve positive effects across the site and surrounding landscape. We specialize in careful, low-impact, ecologically-informed restoration of rare ecosystems, while maintaining high productivity. We work with private landowners, businesses, non-profits, and government agencies to promote restoration and conservation across the Southeast.
